In December Estonian Children\u2019s Literature Centre hosts a solo exhibition from a renowned Russian illustrator Anton Lomaev. The exhibition The Nutcracker<\/em> will be open in the centre from December, 11th, 2021 until January 29th, 2022.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anton Lomaev is a world renowned Russian illustrator who has participated in a number of exhibitions all over the world and been awarded many prizes for his work. In 2019 he won the Golden Apple prize in the Bratislava Illustration Biennial\u2019s international competition for illustrations of books for children and youth. Books illustrated by Lomaev have been published in many countries all over the world, including Russia, France, Germany, USA, China and others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The artist illustrates books for children and adults alike. According to Viive Noor, the Estonian Children\u2019s Literature Centre\u2019s art expert and the curator of the exhibition, it is worth to mention Lomajev\u2019s illustrations for Arthur Conan Doyle\u2019s Sherlock Holmes<\/em> and Isaac Babel\u2019s Tales of Odessa<\/em>. The Christmas exhibition in the centre features Lomaev\u2019s illustrations for E. T. A. Hoffmann\u2019s classic Christmas fairy tale The Nutcracker translated by A. A. Sokolovski.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Books with pictures from Lomaev are warm, rich in detail and joyful. The artist explains on the web-page fairyroom.ru<\/a> that he finds illustrating children\u2019s books easier than illustrating texts for adults: \u201eUnlike illustrations for an “adult” book, it is easier for me to work with children’s illustrations in the sense that I understand my goal more clearly, what I am trying to convey through the image.\u201c The father of two finds that children\u2019s books provide a better form of self-expression for an artist: \u201eas an artist, the space of a children’s book seems to me much larger in terms of the possibilities of self-expression, and the better polygraphic embodiment of children’s books gives this an additional perspective.\u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The exhibition is open during the opening hours of the centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
