After the loss of his father, Jakob’s life is no longer the same. He has somehow made it through Year 4, his sister through Year 7, and summer holidays definitely aren't something to look forward to. Yet, an unexpected and colourful adventure awaits.

At the suggestion of the kids' uncle the family sets off on a road trip together – a journey shaped as much by chance as by necessity. One traveller has an irresistible weakness for strawberries, another for smoked meat, but what do these cravings have to do with the adventure that unfolds? What role is played by a majestic white-tailed eagle, and how can the most ordinary little brown bird become a messenger of peace?

This novella is about learning to live with grief. Rather than dwelling on loss and sadness, it follows its characters through a series of adventures, with warm, understated humour throughout.
